A first look at Firefox Mobile for Windows Mobile

Firefox MobileWindows Mobile users cursing the inability of Pocket Internet Explorer to render web pages properly have long had the option to switch to Opera Mobile, but there’ll soon be another option – Firefox.

The Mozilla Foundation was slow to realise the potential market for a mobile version of Firefox and only announced plans to start working on a handheld browser at the end of 2007. Still, work is progressing and the Firefox Wiki site now has some interface mock-ups on show.

There will be two versions of Firefox Mobile for Windows Mobile – one for devices with a touch-screen, one for those without. At the moment, the team’s design goals include making most activities accessible with one or two finger taps (a stylus will not be required) or key presses, and to mimic the desktop interface as closely as possible.

Firefox Mobile is planned for release sometime this year -- here’s what the team has to show for its efforts so far:

That sure looks a good browser from the screens, but that doesn't mean it will be good of course. I look forward to its release. I shall also hunt for a beta test version. I don't like Opera browser, Deepfish slipped into oblivion, so now I use PIE+ in windows mobile and the included stripped down opera in Symbian UIQ3.
