Dell offers Blu-Ray on a budget

by Julian Prokaza on Monday 31 March 2008 Comment

Dell Inspiron 1525The ever colourful Inspiron 1525 now has one more shade to add to it's palette - and it's decidedly Blu. Dell's announced it'll be selling a Blu-Ray version of the 15.4in laptop for under $900 - and European versions are on the way too.

The hi-def drive is immediately available on the US site as a $250 upgrade for all the Core 2 Duo T5550 and upwards versions. Dell says on its official blog that the starting price for a Blu-Ray equipped model is $879 but after tinkering with customisation options on Dell.com, the cheapest we could manage was $899 for a T5550 spec with a 720p capable 1280x800 widescreen, 120GB hard drive, integrated Intel graphics and a lowly 1GB RAM.

The Dell blog also has it down as being available in Europe "from today", but a roam round the Dell.co.uk site this morning found all the Inspiron 1525 models still stubbornly only offering a DVD combo option.

Dell customer services told us today that they had "no information" on when Blu-Ray would be added to the UK Inspiron 1525 so it looks like it'll be a question of waiting and seeing. Judging by the current US/UK price differences, a starting price around £600 would seem likely but there's been no official word on that one either.
