Intel unveils second-generation Classmate PC

Intel announced the second generation of its Classmate PC at the Shanghai IDF today. There are two new models, with 7in and 9in screens, but both use the same 900MHz Celeron M processor as their predecessor.
Upgrades include 512Mb RAM and a 30Gb hard disk – the previous model had just 256Mb RAM and 1Gb of flash storage. Both models also sport a webcam and 802.11g Wi-Fi is now backed up with mesh network support. Intel also claims that battery life is longer and there’s now the option of both four- and six-cell batteries.
Intel is dubbing this class of PC the ‘Netbook’, but it won’t be producing them – the new models are merely ‘blueprints’ for laptop manufacturers.
Andrew Chien, Intel vice president, Corporate Technology Group and director of Intel Research, said: "Only 5 percent of the world's children today have access to a PC or to the Internet. Education is one of the best examples of how technology improves our lives. The Intel-powered classmate PC is one of the ways we support the IT industry in spreading the benefits of technology in education for children around the world."
Chien went on to say that future Classmate PCs will use the Intel Atom processor.
Update: The second-generation Intel Classmate PC - the CTL 2Go PC - will be on sale in the US from Amazon from 4 April, for $400. There's no word on UK availability yet, though.
