Toshiba readies first 128GB SSD laptop - and three new M700 tablets
Yet more from Toshiba, which has taken the wraps off four new models, including what it says is the first UK laptop to come loaded with a 128GB SSD. The Portégé R500-12S follows the same super lightweight mould as the R500-126 but doubles the SSD capacity on board. It combines it with an ultra-low voltage Core2 Duo U7700, 2GB of RAM and and a 12in LED backlit TFT screen.
The whole caboodle weighs just 779g (guess that's what it means by super lightweight). Surprisingly, given the cost of 128GB SSD drives, Toshiba's priced it at a 'mere' £1599 + VAT - still pricey compared to traditional models but attractive for those who want the speed and reliability of SSD.
Also announced today are three new 12in Portégé M700 tablet PCs - updates to the original line up that went on sale in January. All three get Intel's 45nm 'Penryn' Core2 Duo T8100 processor.
The M700-13A is the new entry level model with 120GB hard drive and 2GB RAM. The M700-13 adds another gig of RAM and a 1.3mp webcam, while the M700-3G13B gets HSDPA for mobile browsing. They come in at £999, £1149 and £1,049 + VAT, respectively.
