New Apple iPhone 2.0 firmware confirms 3G support is planned

iPhone 3G supportIt already seems certain that Apple is readying a 3G iPhone for launch this year, but now further confirmation has surfaced. Existing 8Gb and 16Gb models are listed as “ currently unavailable” in Apple’s UK and US stores, and the stock in O2 stores is already running low, thanks in part to a £100 price cut on the 8Gb model.

The concrete proof, however, comes in the form of beta 5 of the iPhone 2.0 firmware currently in the hands of software developers. As the screenshot from its Network settings screen clearly shows, there's a manual 3G toggle.

There’s some debate online on whether a manual toggle is preferable to an automatic one. There’s still plenty of time for the firmware to change, of course, but the current toggle does clearly state that enabling 3G will decrease battery life – so Apple seems to be leaving it to the user’s discretion.

There’s no word yet on when the 3G iPhone will launch, but the current best-guess is June, at Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference).

Let's not forget that both the CEO of AT&T and the President of the wireless division of AT&T told us months ago that a 3G version of the iphone would be out. Also we know that the AT&T (the wireless part) are barred from taking vacation from June 15 to July 12, so I don't really see any new news other than the picture...which was cool.
