An early review of Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile

Opera Mobile 9.5There’s an early review of Opera Mobile 9.5 over at ZDNet’s The Mobile Gadgeteer blog. Opera’s new and improved web browser for Windows Mobile hasn’t been released yet, but a beta version came preinstalled on an HTC X7510 sent in for review, and mobile blogger Matthew Miller has shared his impressions.

The short version is that Miller likes it – a lot. In fact he calls Opera Mini 9.5 “the new standard for web browsing on a mobile device”. And before anyone points out that this hardly a ringing endorsement for a platform whose default web browser is Pocket Internet Explorer, Miller reckons that Opera Mini 9.5 is even better than Safari on the Apple iPhone .

Opera Mobile 9.5 appears to have many of the same features (most notably tap-to-zoom) as iPhone Safari, but we can confidently guess that the web browsing experience won’t be as slick. But that’s not the software’s fault – it’s the hardware. The glass capacitive touch-screen technology used by the iPhone makes web browsing a joy and poking a stylus at the bendy plastic screen used on most Windows Mobile devices, sadly, just doesn’t compare.

... but you would be wrong I have been using a leaked beta for a few months now, and it does head and shoulders beat Mobile Safari, resistive screen or not.
