Intel Centrino 2 will include solid-state drives (SSDs)

Centrino 2 logoIf a report today by Digitimes is accurate then Intel will launch a series of solid-state drives (SSDs) by the end of this year.

The drives are expected to become part of the Centrino 2 platform, Digitimes reports “sources at PC makers” as saying. According to the story, Intel will call the new product line High Performance SSD and will target the gear at enterprise, mid-range and high-end notebook markets. There’s a bit more (dull) stuff after the jump.

According to the Digitimes report, the Intel High Performance SSDs will initially ship in two versions. The first is Client X25-M, which will have the same physical dimensions as a 2.5-inch drive. Unsurprisingly, the Client X18-M will be a 1.8-inch model. Supposedly, the first models will both offer a capacity of 80GB and both will include SATA interfaces. Intel’s roadmap has the storage capacity doubling to 160GB by the end of the fourth quarter 2008, before bumping up to 250GB and beyond in 2009, say Digitimes’ sources.

All this seems logical enough, as the drive toward SSD for storage in notebooks seems unstoppable. Back in April we reported Toshiba’s president, Shozo Saito, as promising 25% of new laptops to use solid state drives within three years.
