Late arrival for Centrino 2
Saving up for a Centrino 2 notebook? Then it looks like you’ll have a little longer to gather together sufficient cash to splash on Intel ’s next great mobile marchitecture adventure.
Tech site TG Daily is reporting that it has been told by sources close to Intel that the chip-maker will delay the introduction of Centrino 2, aka Montevina, until 14th July 2008. TG Daily calls this a ‘substantial’ delay.
Now, this might be considered true by the highly techie types who frequent TG Daily but come on, let’s have some perspective – it’s only a couple of weeks later than Intel’s intended roadmap. And no-one’s going to die for having to wait an extra fortnight to pick up a Centrino 2 notebook, are they?
However, a delay of this magnitude can be pretty serious for manufacturers and vendors, who may have to redraw their own roadmaps in order to cope with the non-supply of expected chipsets. As well, as TG Daily points out, this situation may afford Intel arch-rival AMD an opportunity to leap ahead with its own mobile platform, Puma.
CNET, meanwhile, is reporting that the delayed Centrino 2 processors will include the T9600, P8600, and P8400, running at 2.8GHz, 2.4GHz, and 2.26GHz respectively.
