Access releases VM Beta 2 PalmOS emulator for Nokia N810

by Julian Prokaza on Friday 30 May 2008 Comment

Access Garnet VMAccess has released a beta 2 of its Palm OS emulator for Nokia N-Series mobile internet devices. Garnet VM is available for OS2008, OS2007 and OS2006, which covers all three N-Series handhelds – the N810, N800 and N770.

Once installed, Garnet VM allows N-Series users to run the 30,000+ Palm OS applications in a small Window – PalmOS runs at 320 x 320, while N-Series devices have 800 x 480 displays. The emulation is pretty good and is certainly one way to wean yourself off a PalmOS device if there are applications you can’t live without, particularly contact and appointment management – one area where the N-Series is lacking.

Access bought PalmSource, the developer of PalmOS, for $324.3 million in 2005 after Palm split into separate hardware and software divisions. Access still licences PalmOS back to Palm for use in its smartphones – which is just as well, given that Palm’s own smartphone operating system, the long-overdue Linux-based PalmOS 2, has yet to see the light of day.
