HTC Dream swings into view

If you can stomach the sickening sound of a stadium echoing with sycophantic sighing then there’s an interesting YouTube clip to view over at IntoMobile, showing HTC’s much-anticipated, Android-based Dream smartphone in action. The site also gives some early specs, which we’ll come to presently.

But first, that video (link after the jump). It shows a pre-production Dream running Google Maps with Street View enabled. If you’ve not seen this before, it’s worth playing with on your PC but to see it running on a smartphone, apparently at a fine frame rate, is quite something. Adding to the effect is the Dream’s built-in compass, which has been employed here to track the movement’s of the demonstrator’s hands: as he turns, so to does the Street View in Google Maps. Okay, so the Google I/O conference audience’s full-on fawning is a bit over the top but even we acknowledge that it is a bit of a ‘wow’ moment.

As for those specs, well, IntoMobile reckons the Dream will have 3.6Mbps HSDPA, 128MB RAM (256MB ROM), a capacitive touch-screen and a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A processor. As well, the device has the built-in compass (employed in the video demo) and accelerometers – which all sounds very whizzy. But the question everyone really wants answering is when can we get out hands on the Dream? Any moles at HTC care to get in touch, you know where to find us.
