Dell E range to take on Eee and Air

Dell EBack in April we were already reporting rumour of a mini Dell Inspiron to compete with the Eee. Now the rumour's been all but confirmed.

Founder and CEO, Michael Dell, himself gave the game away last month when a prototype was spotted under his arm at the All Things:D conference. Now Engadget has leaked details of what looks set to be cheekily called the "Dell E".

The mini XP or Linux notebook will be a diddy 8.9in and ship with Intel's 1.6GHz Atom chip, 512MB or 1GB RAM and 4, 8 or 16GB of SSD storage inside.

A larger, 12.1in "Dell E slim" with a 20mm thickness to rival the Macbook Air is also on the cards. As well as slimness, it adds the option of swapping out the SSD for a conventional 40GB hard drive.

Rumours are pointing to an August launch date with an attractive $300 starting price in the US.
