No bundled dock for iPhone 3G - old ones won't work either

iPhone dockThere's news today of a double whammy for prospective iPhone 3G owners. With all the cost cutting needed to trim the price of the new handset, it seems Apple won't be including an iPhone dock with new purchases.

The Inquirer reports that only a USB cable will included for syncing with a PC or Mac, leaving owners to shell out a likely £29 if they want to keep their iPhone neatly propped up on their desk.

In another story today, iPhone Atlas has it on good authority (well, an Apple Store employee anyway) that, “the iPhone 3G is shaped differently and doesn’t fit in the same dock,” as the original model. So if you were planning on using the dock that came with your old iPhone you'll also be scuppered.

There's been nothing official from Apple but a quick look at the 'In the box' contents on the iPhone 3G's Tech Specs page shows only a 'Dock Connector to USB Cable' listed - with 'iPhone 3G Dock' listed alongside the Bluetooth headset under 'Accessories'. It also lists an 'iPhone 3G Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack', for converting a Universal Dock, as a separate accessory to the standard iPhone adaptor pack. Guess that just about confirms both stories then.
