Apple iPhone activation gateway goes down

We're at London's Apple Store on Regent Street this morning, watching the queue grow and grow. When we turned up, there wasn’t much a queue at all. But, it’s over an hour now since the first customer entered the shop to buy his iPhone 3G, and he still hasn’t emerged.

Rumours from inside the palace of all things Apple suggest that the iPhone activation gateway has "gone down". As a result, it's taking much longer to process customers than expected. That probably explains why we're standing around out here like journalistic lemons.

We will of course post updates as and when we get them, including the promised unboxing video and first-impressions review – assuming our own iPhone 3G purchase is delivered today.

I waited in Apple Store Southampton for 8 hours because of O2's Gateway system not working. The first guy in had to leave for work after waiting 3 hours. Eventually, 3 people managed to get served before Gateway broke again (almost including me, but my address didn't exist on O2's system - well done O2!)Apple had no back up plan, and refused to move to paper contracts, even when O2 insisted they should. By late afternoon, they finally gave in and had to do paper contracts. However, because of doing it that way, I've now been waiting 80 hours for activation. Thanks for your "great" service O2 and Apple...
