Atom shortage holds up Eee PCs
Seems Taiwan's Digitimes weren't lying when they picked up on the shortage of Intel's new Atom processor. The Register is reporting that a lack of Atoms is now holding up production of the Asus Eee PC 901.
Interestingly, XP versions of the 901 seem to be readily available, while Linux models are all but sold out. Any Microsoft conspiracy theories have been dashed, however - Asus says it makes equal numbers of both versions and the Linux ones sell faster.
The Atom shortage has already had an impact on the number of Eee PCs Asus was hoping to sell. Digitimes says it shipped out 1.7 million of the mini laptops in the first six months of 2008. Although that sounds healthy, it's actually 300,000 short of the number it was hoping to flog.
A second UK shipment of 901s is expected later this month but supplies still won't be plentiful until Intel ramps up its Atom production so get you name down now if you're after some Eee action quick.
