Dell E ready to land in August

Dell EWhile the Eee PC 901 is stalling with supply issues, Dell is said to be all set to launch its own Eee rival, the Dell E.

As well as sharing the fifth letter of the alphabet, the E looks to have a very similar spec list to the Asus - but a much lower price. Digitimes reports that $299 will get you a trio of USB ports, an obligatory Intel Atom processor, an 8.9in 1024x600 display and a webcam.

The article has it pegged for a US launch next month, which matches with earlier rumours, but doesn't mention when Europe might see its arrival. Our guess would be not long after the States and for something around a £199 price.

Dell has some catching up to do on the 1.7 million selling Eee but Digitime's sources say Dell will be able to ship two to three million of the little Es by the end of this year. Asus better getter ready for some serious competition.

I finally got to lay my fingers on the Acer Aspire One and the Advent 4211 today (aka the MSI Wind but cheaper; Google and you shall find). The keyboards of both are so bad they're unusable by anyone who is a touch typist and not diminutive. The Advent is far superior but the lack of a palm rest is annoying and it looks as if this is something the Dell may fix. 1200x600 however is a step backwards. 1200x800 please, if possible, and 802.11n, but that's not SO important.

they better offer a Linux flavor.I wonder if their pricing will be in line with other UMPC since Dell has such a large hookup with suppliers. Maybe they can hook up the $300 pimp lappy..
