Annoying. I can't help but notice that the Eee's and the Wind come with all the extras already installed. But I'll wait until the usability tests come out. The keyboard is the single most important factor (IMO) in netbooks.
Dell: Time for plan E
More details have emerged on Dell's Eee challenger, the Dell E, and also its MacBook Air botherer brother, the Dell E Slim.
Unearthed by Engadget this picture shows the new Slim, described by Dell as a pro-sumer Mobile Internet Device. It will have 12.1in screen and come in two versions with either a 1.3 or 1.6GHz Atom processor. The 1.6GHz Slim+ will get Bluetooth and also boost the standard hard drive from 40 to 60GB and the RAM from 512MB or 1GB.
The slides also show that three models of the 8.9in E will be offered. The cheapest, expected to be just $300 when it goes on sale next month, will have a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB flash memory and Wi-Fi. Two more expensive models, the E Video and E Video+ will add webcams, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage (12GB on the Video+). The Video+ will also get Bluetooth.
According to the slides, Linux will be standard across the board but there is an indication that Windows XP will also be offered. Interestingly there's also a slide pointing to an 'E2' sometime next year - though no details on exactly what form that may take.

I think one of the key factors with this machine is that it'll have a netbook-tailored version of Ubuntu on it, which is pretty critical from a user/support point of view.
