Qik opens up to public. Works on Apple iPhone, too
Live video-streaming site Qik has moved from its invitation-only alpha stage to launch as a public beta. This means anyone who wants to can now use their mobile phone camera to broadcast video across the internet.
Qik requires the use of special software, which is free and downloaded and installed quickly and easily. However, only certain phones are supported – lots of Nokias and the odd Motorola and Samsung. For the full list of supported handsets, visit Qik’s sign-up page.
But what of Qik on iPhone – Apple’s handset doesn’t support video, does it? Oh yes it does. More after the cut.
In fact, Qik announced a while back that it had managed to get its video-streaming system working on the original iPhone. It then waited to see if Apple would release its own video-capture facility on the iPhone 3G. When that failed to arrive, Qik decided to roll-out its iPhone live-streaming service. In this video, Qik’s Michael Fortson shows the iPhone broadcasting live video. However, Qik for iPhone remains in alpha. So, if you fancy video-streaming from your iPhone, you’ll have to email support@qik.com and hope that the person manning the inbox is feeling nice.
