No AMD Atom competitor any time soon

AMDWith the success of UMPCs and the current shortage of Intel Atom processors to go in them, hopes were that the world's second largest chip-maker, AMD, might come up with a rival.

Not so says its Chief Marketing Officer, Nigel Dessau. He's told eWeek that AMD will, "focus on what we do well at this point."

Dessau does admit that cheap, low-power processors are an important and growing segment but adds, "we are watching... rather than playing... as it matures we'll see where it goes."

In other words, don't hold your breath for any AMD-powered UMPCs in the forseeable - unless he's bluffing, of course...
