Cloud computing set to go mainstream

CloudsThe term ' cloud computing' has been around so long now that you wonder why it isn't already part of the mainstream. That could, finally be about to happen though as three world tech giants, Intel, Yahoo and HP, have joined forces to drive the concept forward.

They're to set up six virtual (appropriately) research centres, each stocked with up to 4,000 computers, that'll look at ways to bring cloud computing to consumers.

Online storage, as being considered by Asus for its Eee PC, is an obvious starting point but the ambition is to take the idea much further. The Director of HP's Strategic Research Lab has told the BBC, "To my mind it is the natural evolution of the internet and if we look back in 15 years time we will be astounded by what cloud computing has allowed to happen."

The centres will be up and running by the end of this year. We await the results with interest.
