New Dell Latitudes - but no Dell E

Dell Latitude E4200 Today was expected to be the day Dell's much anticipated UMPC, the ' Dell E', was finally announced. Instead we were treated to a new line-up of 'E-Series' Latitude PCs with marathon batteries.

The new laptops boast up to an incredible 19-hours of battery life. There are seven in all, starting with the 12.1in E4200 (pictured) that weighs in at just 1kg. The 13.3in E4300 is another lightweight, tipping the scales at 1.54kg.

Mid-size models include the 14.1in E6400 and 15.4in E6500 - both pitched as desktop replacements aimed at 'high performance' users, with prices starting at £709 and £729 respectively.

Slightly lower-end is the 14.1in E5400 and 15.4in E5500 that both start at £469.

Finally there's the semi-rugged E6400, a 14.1in laptop built to meet the US Military's 810F standard for dust, vibration and humidity. It starts at £899.

So that's the new Latitudes - now when are we going to get that UMPC we were promised?

We put off buying the Acer One two weeks ago because we loved the leaked specs of the Dell E Mini but with school about to start and no announcement today, it seems that we will get the kids the Acer One.They played with my sister in law's for a whole weekend and loved it. At 349$, so does our minister of finances: my wife. With Linux inside, so do I: the tech guy in the family who is sick and tired of family's Windows virus, malware problems.Maybe all the announcements arent out yet and we might get this at the end of the work day there. I'll wait till then then go over to Staples and pick up two Acer netbooks along with other school supplies.

The 19-hour battery life claim is highly misleading. According to dell's site (http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/latit/en/latitude_landing_e6400_battery_life.pdf), the 19-hour claim comes from a laptop with a SSD, a 9-cell internal battery and and 12 cell external battery. In other words, they may be somewhat more power-efficient than competitors (at least, Dell's claiming that), but certainly not 3x more.

My and my manager laughed at that claim. It was either going to be an additional battery or some mega internal battery that doubled the size & weight of the laptop - we have a Vostro 1500 with a 9-cell battery and it only just fits in its bag.
