Qik launches live video-streaming beta for iPhone 3G

Hot on the heels of the launch of a similar service for the original iPhone, live-video-streaming outfit Qik has released a beta version of its software for the iPhone 3G.

However, as with the original iPhone Qik product, this latest release is only useful to those who have jailbroken, or are prepared to jailbreak, their 3G handsets.

With that done, getting Qik is a simple case of entering your details at http://qik.com/sign_up, which will result in the receipt of an activation SMS. Qik’s Michael Fortson says that Qik for the iPhone 3G will only work successfully over 3G or Wi-Fi, stating that EDGE networks are not up to the job of streaming video. In a video over at Qik, Forston demonstrates the iPhone 3G running Qik, though he doesn't mention whether the connection is Wi-Fi or 3G.

As we reported last month, Qik’s technology allows mobile phone users to their handset’s built-in cameras to broadcast video across the internet. Qik employs special the use of special software, which is free and downloaded and installed quickly and easily. However, only certain phones are supported – lots of Nokias and the odd Motorola and Samsung. Now you can add both iPhones to that list but remember, it only works on jailbroken handsets. For the full list of supported handsets, visit Qik’s sign-up page .
