It's cute but it's the wrong laptop for me. I'm STILL waiting for something like the Samsung Q45 with an Atom processor and a long battery life. I don't NEED to make a fashion statement. I just want something small with a full size keyboard that doesn't run too hot, is light and lasts all day. Looks like Dell can't get its act together with the mini Inspiron. By the time it's shipping we'll be waiting for something else.Come on Samsung, please follow this up with with a machine costing half as much. It's a much bigger market.
Samsung unveils "lighter than air" X360 laptop
Apple's MacBook Air has a new rival. Samsung's used IFA to take the wraps of the ultra slim Samsung X360 (no relation to a certain Microsoft console).
The laptop is cheekily described as "lighter than air". On account of it not rising from the stands, helium balloon style, we'll take that as a dig at the fact that the 13.3in Samsung X360 is in fact a shade lighter than the MacBook Air at 1.27g.
Inside there's an Ultra Low Voltage Centrino 2 processor, up to 4GB RAM and either 64 or 128GB of SSD storage. The 1280x800 screen is LED-backlit. Th X360 also gets a finger print scanner, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, three (cough, Apple) USB ports and HDMI. Samsung is also promising a 3G data option before the year is out - although it wasn't clear why it wouldn't be offering it from the start.
Like the Air, there's no built-in optical drive but it is dockable. Instead, a seven-in-one card reader does the job of taking care of your portable storage needs.
Course, the bit you all want to know is how thick it is. Well, it's 16.7mm at its thinnest, rising to a lardy 30.9mm at its chunkiest point. That's frankly not a patch on the Air, which goes from 4mm to 19.4mm. No manilla envelope unveilings for you, Samsung.
Battery life is claimed to be up to ten hours or six hours 'real world' use, which last time we checked is where we spent most of our time.
It'll be out in October running Vista, with prices starting at €1,400 and going up to €2000.
