Super Talent's Eee-friendly SSD
The folks over at Super Talent have come up with an easy route to upgrade you Asus Eee PC. Its Eee-tested SSDs are designed to replace the built-in SSD storage attached to the Eee's miniPCI-Express slot.
They come in sizes from 8GB to 64Gb with reasonable-ish read rates of 40MB/sec and write rates of between 15 and 28MB/sec. Read on for which models you can use them with.
Since the SSD is permanently soldered on to the 2GB and 4GB 700 series Ees, you'll have a time upgrading, but on the 8GB 701 and 702 the SSD is ripe for swapping.
The 900 series has a mixture of both soldered and removable storage. On the 900 and 901, for example, you can swap out the 8GB or 16GB PCI Express Mini SSD module for a bigger version, and still take advantage of the extra 4GB soldered to the mainboard.
With the 900A you get a bonus 8GB on the mainboard to complement the SSD, so with a new 64GB SSD installed you'll have a total of 74GB to play with.
On the 1000 you can upgrade the 8GB SSD, and also get an extra 32GB from the bundled SDHC card, giving a maximum storage total of 96GB. Super Talent also lists compatibility with the 903 and 905. As for the hard drive HD and H models - you're on your own.
The replacement drives are out in the States from next month, costing an attractive $53 (16GB), $73 (32GB), and $149 (64GB) each.
