Try Mobile Firefox Alpha (Fennec) on the desktop

What with all our server shenanigans in recent days we didn’t get around to reporting the recent arrival in alpha of the Mobile Firefox web browser.

Well, anyway, it’s been out and about for a few days now, at least for those lucky (/unlucky) sorts who pack a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. However, less widely reported is the fact that Mobile Firefox – which carries the codename Fennec, presumably after the miniature African fox – is also available for the desktop. More after the cut.

Okay, so using a browser designed for handheld devices on the broad expanse of a desktop screen is fundamentally pointless but if you want a taste of what the Mozilla folks have in store for mobile users, it’s worth the download. Actually, at the moment, it seems what Mozilla has in store for mobile users is plenty of bugs but hey, this is an alpha.

Available now for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Fennec certainly shows some promise, with tabbed browsing tied together with some nifty gesture controls: just sweep your finger left on the main browser window to see the tabs or swipe right to access the settings screens. Not a cheap dig -- just an allusion to earlier debates here on Mobile Computer. Some of us like the N810 and some of are less convinced. It's good that we all have an opinion, right?
