Google releases Gmail for mobile 2.0
Short and sweet version: Google has released the next major bump of Gmail for mobile – version 2.0, in other words. If you want to know more, read on.
Along with the vague promise of "overall performance improvement", Gmail for mobile 2.0 offers some quantifiable not to mention welcome improvements.
For starters, users can now manage multiple accounts with the mobile version of Gmail, so it’s possible to switch between a Gmail and Google Apps account from the same screen. As well, multiple email drafts can be saved and there’s a bunch of shortcut keys. More after the cut.
Gmail for mobile 2.0 also brings what Google dubs 'basic offline support', so messages (well, "the most recent" ones, anyway) can be read you’re out of signal. As well, messages can be composed offline and stored in the Gmail mobile outbox to be sent automatically when a signal is rediscovered.
According to Google, most Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phones are supported, along with BlackBerrys. No mention yet of Windows Mobile or Symbian phones, nor the iPhone, but we imagine support for these won’t be too far behind.
Anyway, skip on over Google Mobile Blog for further details.
