LG's cut-price Cookie brings touchscreens to the masses

by Julian Prokaza on Friday 24 October 2008 29 Comments

LG KP500 CookieIn a launch ranking somewhere below the iPhone and somewhere above the usual pay-as-you-go dross, LG's given the KP500 its official UK announcement.

Dubbed the 'Cookie' it's, "an affordable touchscreen phone", for those who don't feel like shelling out for an iPhone/Bold/5800/Touch Diamond. At £159 with £10 credit on O2 PAYG, it won't break the bank but it still manages a 3in touchscreen, 3mp camera, FM radio and all the usual gubbins. Don't go looking for 3G, Wi-Fi or GPS, though, because they're not there. More details and the press release after the cut.

The user interface is similar to HTC's TouchFlo , with a collection of widgets on offer including an on-screen clock and memo pad. It also manages handwriting recognition. If you're more of a thumb-typer, there's also an on-screen keyboard that pops up automatically when the phone's turned, thanks to the built-on motion sensor. It'll be available from next month from Carphone Warehouse , just in time for Xmas.

UPDATE: It's now had a price cut.

LG Cookie makes its global debut

A feature-rich handset with the ultimate touchscreen experience

Berkshire, UK, 24 October, 2008 - LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, today announces it is bringing an affordable touchscreen phone to the masses with the introduction of the LG Cookie (LG-KP500).

At 13.9mm slim, this slinky, lightweight (89g) handset packs in an array of features that would come as standard in any premium-priced phone. The LG Cookie boasts a highly intuitive Active Flash user interface with haptic feedback. Its vivid widget icons on its 3.0”inch screen make it so simple to use. The LG Cookie’s QWERTY keyboard slides into view when it is held horizontally and its auto-rotating display shifts images or documents for enhanced viewing, while its compact 3 megapixel camera makes the LG Cookie a great all rounder.

“The LG Cookie was developed to reflect the desire of many consumers who want to own a full touchscreen phone without having to pay a premium price” says Jeremy Newing, head of LG mobile marketing, LG Electronics. “LG has stepped up to meet the demand of today’s ‘Touch Generation’ as more and more consumers look to experience the pleasure of using touchscreen phones. With the introduction of the LG Cookie we are continuing to build on our range of feature-rich yet affordable handsets”.

Interacting with a handset has never been so fun and easy, as the user can personalise the interface by placing their favourite icon function widgets such as MP3 player, FM radio, calendar and clock in any order they wish.

Instant access to your friends is quick and simple as the LG Cookie allows for photos to be attached to a friend’s contact details, for one-touch speed dial. It has automatic synchronisation with Windows Media Player, so managing and listening to favourite music files is quick and easy.

For the full interactive gaming experience the LG Cookie has a range of motion sensor games that respond to the player shifting, flipping and moving the handset. An artfully concealed stylus pen slides in and out for users who wish to use handwriting recognition for writing emails, texts and editing photos.

The LG Cookie will be available from Carphone Warehouse.
