HTC Touch HD on sale now

HTC Touch HDAs if you didn't have enough to choose from with the iPhone 3G, Xperia X1, T-Mobile G1 and BlackBerry Storm all lining up in stores, now HTC's Touch HD has joined the fray. It's just found its way into stock at devicewire.com for a cool £498.19 sim-free.

If that's a tad beyond your budget then unlocked HDs will also be available with contracts on Orange and O2 courtesy of mobiles.co.uk from Friday. It's selling it for free on £35+ 18 month tariffs on either network.

HTC is fast becoming the most prolific of the touchscreen mobile makers. As well as its Touch Cruise , Touch Pro , Touch Viva and Touch Diamond , it's also behind T-Mobile's G1 . This, though, is arguably the one to top them all thanks to the gorgeous WVGA 480×800 screen that lends the HD its name.

While that resolution doesn't actually make it HD-Ready, the 800 pixel width is the best there is for mobile web browsing. It's also a huge step forward in clarity on a suitably large 3.8in screen - a screen size achieved without making the HD any larger than an iPhone.

Add in HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5MP autofocus cam, FM radio and 3.5mm headphone jack and the HD should give the competition a run for its money.

Orange, which has it as a network exclusive till next year, has promised it'll have the HD out early this month, which should mean stock in the next few days. If you're looking for other sim-free sources, Play.com are stating Friday for delivery at £519.99 and Expansys have next Tuesday as a likely arrival date for £524.99.

Would love to know how I can get a Touch HD on a US Domestic carrier -- I have been waiting for news that my current carrier Verizon will carry it or not. If not -- any news about another carrier -- any advice on how to get an unlocked one for use on a domestic carrier. Would love some decent advice on this.

You can always buy from the UK sim free - especially now the pound is so weak against the dollar.

Yeah, but what were you expecting? It's an expensive phone. Through Orange, it's supposedly £80 for the phone + £35/month on an 18 month contract, and that's with a measly 250MB monthly data allowance. But at least it's cheaper than in Asia, where it'll retail for the equivalent of ~$930 (in Singapore, at least).

Well, it would have been over $1000 a few weeks ago. With the sim-only tariffs you can get here now, it's almost worth paying up front for the phone and paying substantially less for your minutes, especially as it means you're not tied for 18+ months.

The HTC Touch HD is available on Orange and O2 from tomorrow morning. It's only a 5 megapixel camera but i was very impressed with the examples i saw, not to mention the clarity of the whole phone due to the HD content

It's still not available on O2, does anybody know the real reason for the delay?

Apparently Orange have got an exclusive on this phone until 2009, which is why my order on mobiles.co.uk for an O2 contract is still "pending"
