Sony Vaio P series will cost £849+ in UK!

Ok, so we thought $900 for the new Vaio P series announced at CES was pricey but we've just discovered that the UK version of Sony's baby Vaio will be £849 with VAT for the base 1.33GHz Atom and 60GB HDD spec P11Z/Q.

If you want SSD then it'll be a staggering £969 after tax. And that's just for the P19WN/Q Vaio with the same 1.33GHz Atom Z520 processor and a 60GB SSD. If you want to move up to the premium P19VN/Q with a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 inside and a larger 128GB SSD, you'll have to fork out an even more staggering (we're running out of adjectives) £1,368.99, with the VAT.

We're used to paying a premium for Sony and we were left impressed by our first look at the P, but close to a grand for a 1.3GHz Atom "netbook" (sorry, ultra-portable) and £400 more to move up to a processor that's now standard on virtually every other £300 netbook?

Has Sony missed the news about the credit crunch - or do they know something we don't? Cutting edge technology or no, with prices like these we can't see the P Series being anything other than a rich executive's toy - and there aren't too many of those around at the moment.
