New portrait keyboard for BlackBerry Storm

The BlackBerry Storm hasn’t suffered from a shortage of bad mouthing, with much of reviewers’ and users’ unhappiness directed at data entry – the click-screen keyboard is frustrating at best and the full QWERTY effort is only available in landscape mode.

But it looks like RIM is addressing at least this latter annoyance in the next Storm firmware update, which has been leaked online. Head on over to BerryReview and you’ll find download links for both the Storm 9500 (Vodafone/UK) and the 9530 (Verizon/US). More after the cut.

According to a few Storm users who have been brave enough to update their handsets with this unofficial firmware download, the revisions include the ability to opt for a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode. Previously, users holding their Storms tall were required to pluck away using RIM’s SureType condensed keyboard, which isn’t to everyone’s liking.

Other feedback suggests that the Storm’s scrolling has been improved and the speed of the accelerometer-controlled rotation increased markedly.
