PC World launches £999 quad-core laptop

Advent 6555After a gaming laptop for under a grand? If so, PC World's latest model in its Advent range should instantly appeal.

It's a shame PC World couldn't dream up a slightly more inspiring name, but the 6555 is impressive in that it houses an Intel Q9000 Core 2 Quad processor – according to PC World it's the UK's lowest priced Core 2 Quad laptop.

Along with the speedy CPU, you get a 250Gb hard drive (no word on how fast it is), 4Gb RAM and a 17in widescreen TFT. Further specs after the cut.

The press release says graphics are taken care of by a 512Mb Nvidia Geforce 9600, but when we checked out the PC World website an ATI Radeon HD4850 was listed as the graphics card. We'll seek clarification on this.

UPDATE: The Advent 6555 does indeed come with a Radeon HD4850

The laptop apparently also has a 'stylish gaming keyboard', but by the looks of it this simply means arrows have been place on the W, A, S and D keys.

Going by the photo, the Advent 6555 isn't going to win any design awards (those smudge marks on the keyboard don't look great either), but you can't really grumble when you consider it's just £999. And as if getting a quad-core processor wasn't enough, PC World has also found room in the budget for a Blu-ray drive, allowing you to watch high-definition movies on the 17in screen.

The Advent 6555 is available now, exclusively from PC World.

'the Advent 6555 isn't going to win any design awards but you can't really grumble when you consider it's just £999'

If you do the research having quad core is pointless there is barely any benefit of 4 processors compared to 2. I have 4gb ram in my £450 pound laptop. I have far larger hard drive than the poor 250gb in this advent laptop. So you are being screwed at £999 as you will be paying for something pointless. Also unless you have a 64bit processor and operating system your 4gm memory will be reduced to 3gb memory.

Actually Shaun, quad core laptops are far from pointless. We have several mobile users who have the requirement to run multiple virtual machines, so quad cores are a God send. As for 4GB of ram, it is barely enough, 8GB would be the ticked.

I couldnt find the laptop on PC World but i found a better laptop for th esame price. The Asus X64JQ-JX016V is a much slimmer laptop with a core i7-720QM 2ghz processor 1333MHz 8MB Cache and it also has a blu-ray drive with 4gb ram and a better 640gb disc space, it has windows 7 and it has 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics with a 15.6" Widescreen LCD display and to top it all of, you have a HDMI output so you can plug into your HD TV! (And it has a vga output if you were wondering with a 8-in-1 card reader)
