Huawei's mysterious Android handset
So, here's a question for you - where are all the Android phones at Mobile World Congress? So far the only unveiling of note has been HTC and Vodafone's Magic. Nothing from Samsung , nothing from Sony Ericsson (which has now told us it won't be going Android till next year), nothing from anyone in fact. The one sure-fire banker ahead of the show was Huawei but all it turned up with was this (non working) prototype embarrassingly shoved to the back of a display cabinet with precious little information about its design.
From the dimly lit display case there's not much to see, but the official pic below shows that it displays an iPhone-like disregard for physical buttons. That's not very Android-like you might think, but Huawei's come up with its own custom Android interface (also not shown) that'll presumably do away with the need for a physical keyboard and other keys.
At its launch, Chen Chongjun, director for Huawei's terminal marketing project department, called it a "milestone product" in Huawei's march from dongle maker to mobile phone brand name. He also promised "innovative designs" in both appearance and software, with the usual "unprecedented entertainment experience" that everyone else lays claim to.
It's set to arrive in "Q3" this year (any time from July), though it's far from certain whether it'll be released here or just in Huawei's native China. You could say we have more questions than answers on this one.
