Touchstone takes the shine off Palm Pre

The Palm Pre – it’s small, black, smart and shiny. Very, very shiny. Yes?

Well, it will be all of those things so long as you don’t want to use it with the Touchstone charger stand. Why? Well, as Engadget has just revealed, the standard shiny backside of the Palm Pre doesn’t contain the magnets necessary to cling to the sloped surface of the Touchstone without it sliding off.

In its place, Palm is going to ship a replacement battery cover with the Touchstone, and this will take away the shine. More after the cut.

The replacement rearside case included with the Touchstone will instead feature a soft-touch (matte) finish, reports Engadget. However, this alternative battery cover will not be available as a standalone option – it will be supplied only with the Touchstone.

Now, depending on your viewpoint you may consider this a sensible or silly move on the part of Palm. On the one hand, if the company had shipped the Palm with the matte cover as standard, then it could’ve flogged the shiny rearside as an upgrade.

But looked at another way, if it’s possible to buy the matte case separately and one is required to work with a Touchstone, then it will be impossible to share Palm’s inductive-charging device among office colleagues, say – so that means more Touchstone sales. Actually, this could be a pretty shrewd move by Palm.
