Give your Acer Aspire One a memory boost
Acer's Aspire One is a hugely popular netbook (despite Psion's grumblings, it looks like we might be safe to use the term 'netbook' after all), but the basic model only has a relatively meagre 512Mb of memory to play with.
It's enough for the pre-installed Linpus OS, but the Aspire One will soon start complaining if you try installing a different Linux disto or Windows XP.
With no easy-access memory slots, adding extra RAM isn't the simplest of tasks. You could try slamming an oversized memory module into the screen (as pictured), but we'd recommend following the in-depth guide just posted by the Register. Click through to read more about it.
It's definitely not one for the faint-hearted, and the fact the guide is spread over five pages gives you an idea of how complex the process is compared to other netbook memory upgrades. With spring-loaded clips having to be carefully released and the chassis prised apart, you'll need to take it nice and slow to avoid causing scratches or permanent damage.
Going by the guide, there are also a whole heap of screws to remove and cables to unplug. And when it comes to finally locating the memory slots you actually have to remove the entire motherboard from the chassis.
Needless to say, this sort of activity will blow your warranty to smithereens. Bonne chance!
