Windows 3.1 on a Nokia N95? Why not

There’s really no more point to this story than there is behind the effort someone has put into installing Windows 3.1 on their Nokia N95 but hey, you want to know about it – don’t you?

Truth is, there’s an irresistibility about seeing a gadget behave in a way that its maker never intended and with that in mind, we found it deeply satisfying to discover that a relatively recent mobile phone like the N95 can run an ancient operating system designed for PCs.

To be honest, the photo here is sufficient for our enjoyment but if you want to know more, read on after the cut.

Seems some Polish chap going by the name of Marcin-PRV has taken it upon himself to turn Nokia’s smartphone into a stupid old PC. He did this by installing Windows 3.1 into the Symbian S60 version of DOSBox (no, we didn’t even know such a thing existed either). He details his work over at FrazPC.

Anyway, by all accounts – well, by the developer’s own account, translated from Polish into English-ish thanks to Google – it works, after a fashion. No idea about pointer control, though text entry is apparently limited to numbers only. So great for using the Windows Calculator, then.
