Western Digital launches one terabyte laptop hard drive

WD Scorpio BlueLaptop hard drives always lag behind those for desktop PCs when it comes to capacity, but the gap is narrowing. Hitachi launched the first 500Gb 2.5” hard drive in January 2008 and eighteen months later, Western Digital has announced the world’s first one terabyte 2.5” laptop drive — the WD Scorpio Blue.

The leap in capacity comes courtesy of increased data density — essentially the number of bits that can be crammed onto each magnetic disk platter. For the Scorpio Blue, Western Digital has managed to cram a whopping 333Gb of space onto each 2.5” platter. This means that the 1Tb drive uses three platters and, as a result, is a 12.5mm form-factor drive — which means that laptops designed to use slimmer 9.5mm drives won’t be able to use it.

The WD Scorpio Blue is a 2.5” SATA drive with an 8Mb cache and a claimed data transfer rate of 3 Gbit/s — that’s on a par with Western Digital’s fastest desktop hard drives. Two models will be available, with 1Tb and 750 GB capacities, but remember that when it comes to hard disks, 1Tb equals 1000Gb, and 1Gb equals 1000Mb — the standard power of 1024 rule doesn’t apply to hard disk manufacturers...

Both WD Scorpio Blue drives are available as bare drives — $250 for the 1Tb WD10TEVT and $190 for the 750Gb WD7500KEVT — and in Western Digital’s My Passport Essential SE external USB drive.
