Details of new Sony PRS-300 & PRS-600 ebook readers leaked online

If the recent Amazon Kindle débâcle has you looking to Sony for your first ebook reader purchase, it’s probably worth keeping your wallet closed for the time being. Someone over at Sony Insider has found — and posted — the service manuals for two as-yet-unannounced Sony Reader models.

Dated July 2009, the documents describe a US and European Sony PRS-300 Reader as having a 5” display with 440Mb of internal storage and no memory card slot; the PRS-600 Reader has a 6” touch-sensitive screen (presumably for note-taking, like the iRex Iliad), an audio output,  440Mb of internal memory and a memory card slot. Wi-Fi , 3G or a backlit screen isn’t mentioned.

Being service manuals, there’s no mention of price or availability of these (supposed) new models, but Sony Insider notes that the current (US-only) PRS-700 Reader is no longer available at the Sony Style online store. The Sony PRS-505 Reader is still available in the UK Sony Style store, however.

We rather liked the PRS-505 when we reviewed it last year, with only the high price of commercial ebooks preventing us from rating it more highly. The price has crept up by £25 since last September, but judging by the model name, the PRS-300 sounds like it should be a little cheaper when it eventually appears in the UK.

Both the Sony PRS-300 and PRS-600 service manuals are available on Google Documents — for now…
