New Acer and Dell CULV laptops with 11in screens spotted in the wild

‘Thin and light’ laptops with power-efficient Intel CULV processors aren’t intended to compete with inexpensive Intel Atom-powered netbooks, but some new model seem to be small enough to offer a tempting alternative.

Acer only announced three new models in its TimeLine range of ‘thin and light’ laptops, but now another model has been spotted in China. The Acer Aspire 1410 has an 11.6in screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution, 2Gb of RAM and a 250Gb hard drive, and weighs 1.4kg.

The Acer Aspire 1410 is a similar size and weight to the ASUS Eee PC 1101HA we reviewed recently, but the difference is that it packs a more powerful Intel Mobile Celeron 723 processor running at 1.2GHz. It looks set to ship with a 6-cell battery, which might raise a few questions about battery life — Mobile Celeron 723 is pretty frugal, but it uses around four times the power of the Intel Atom.

There's no word on UK availability yet for the Aspire 1410, but the Acer Germany site already has a listing for the laptop and some US retailers have it available for pre-order for around $470 (around £290).

The Inspiron Mini 12 recently reached its end of life, but Dell looks set to replace it with a CULV-powered ultraportable. The Inspiron 11z was revealed to Gizmodo this week and although the reporter was able to snag a few photos, he was sworn to secrecy when it came to  the specifications — other than the processor, of course. Again, there’s no word on availability yet, or price.
