More Apple tablet "details" emerge - February 2010 launch?

by Julian Prokaza on Tuesday 15 September 2009 Comment

There wasn’t even the slightest whiff of it at last week’s Rock & Roll event, but the rumours of an Apple tablet computer refuse to die. Despite our skepticism about Apple launching anything as mundane as a mere iPhone Maxi, the evidence is mounting that something new is being cooked up in Cupertino…

The latest tidbit comes from the Taiwan Economic News, which quotes sources in the components industry as saying the mysterious device will consist of a 9.6in multi-touch display, built-in 3G and a processor produced by Apple’s own chip-making facility — the recently acquired PA Semi.

The report continues with a claim that DynaPack International Technology Corp has won the Apple contract to supply 300,000 long-lasting battery packs and that all suppliers are getting ready to ship their wares in December, for a February 2010 launch. The price is predicted to be between $799 to $999.

Despite the specifics about the specification, there’s little more than speculation here and the mention on onboard 3G is interesting. If true — and the tablet exists, of course — it means that Apple will stick with AT&T in the US, since it’s the only mobile operator with a 3G network.

This won’t please Apple fans — AT&T’s performance has been widely criticised by iPhone users and the network is only now starting to roll out MMS support for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, despite it being supported by iPhone OS 3.0 — which appeared in June this year.
