Acer issues voluntary safety recall for Aspire laptops

Acer has issued a voluntary safety recall for some of its laptops after reports that certain Aspire models can overheat. The recall affects Aspire AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG laptops that were manufactured before September 15 2009.

The problem apparently lies with the microphone cable that runs beneath the left side of the laptops’ wrist-rest. When pressure is repeatedly applied to this area, the cable may overheat, resulting in the plastic case deforming.

If you own one of these Aspire laptops, you can check if it’s one of the affected models by looking up its serial number at the Acer Customer Care web site. Acer is replacing the microphone cable in all affected laptops.
