Microsoft says sorry to Sidekick users, but still has their data

Microsoft and T-Mobile have issued an apology to Sidekick smartphone users in the US for losing all of their data last weekend, but it looks like the situation isn’t anywhere near as bad as everyone first thought.

The initial concern was that with the loss of the Sidekick servers’ live data and backups, users would lose everything from contact lists to calendars from their devices, but Microsoft now thinks that most data can be recovered.

A statement from Roz Ho, Corporate Vice President of Premium Mobile Experiences at Microsoft, states that:

We are pleased to report that we have recovered most, if not all, customer data for those Sidekick customers whose data was affected by the recent outage. We plan to begin restoring users’ personal data as soon as possible, starting with personal contacts, after we have validated the data and our restoration plan. We will then continue to work around the clock to restore data to all affected users, including calendar, notes, tasks, photographs and high scores, as quickly as possible.

It’s thought that only a few Sidekick users will end up losing data permanently as a result by the server crash and Microsoft will post an update on the situation at the weekend. It hasn’t, however, provided a satisfactory explanation for what exactly caused the crash, nor why the backup was affected.

Oh, and “high scores”..?
