Mac Boot Camp support for Windows 7 coming soon

by Julian Prokaza on Friday 23 October 2009 Comment

MacBook owners looking to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp can get by with drivers downloaded directly from various component manufacturers, but this won’t be necessary for much longer.

Apple announced yesterday that plans are afoot to update Boot Camp to fully support Windows 7 under Mac OS Snow Leopard before the end of the year. The brief message doesn’t mention whether or not both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 will bother be covered, but it does state that not all Macs will be supported. That’s ‘officially’ supported, of course — we doubt Apple will take any steps to prevent Windows 7 being installed without sanctioned drivers.

Here’s the full list of Macs that won’t be enjoying the Boot Camp update:

  • iMac (17-inch, Early 2006)
  • iMac (17-inch, Late 2006)
  • iMac (20-inch, Early 2006)
  • iMac (20-inch, Late 2006)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2006)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2006)
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2006, Intel Xeon Dual-core 2.66GHz or 3GHz)
