How to run the Google Navigation app on the T-Mobile G1
One of the killer features of Android 2.0 is the new Google Navigation app that provides free turn-by-turn directions, but don’t be fooled into thinking that you’ll need to upgrade your smartphone to make use of it.
One clever hacker on the XDA Developers forum has figured out a way to run the application on the T-Mobile G1 — the original Android smartphone that first went on sale a year ago.
The hack is of dubious legality since although Android is an open source operating system, Google’s own applications are not. Google did recently send a cease and desist order to a developer who had repackaged some of the Android applications into his own hacked firmware for Android smartphones.
So, if you’re interested in trying Google Navigation on your G1 for yourself, we’d suggest doing it sooner rather than later — although you will have to wade through several pages of forum posts to figure out the exact instructions.
