Virgin Media customers unable to access file storage sites

virgin media logoSubscribers to Virgin Media's broadband network have reported they've been unable to access online file storage sites such as Rapidshare and MegaUpload across a number of dedicated tech forums including those of PC Advisor and Digital Spy.

The cause of the blocking is unknown although there is the chance it could be the result of a fault on the provider's broadband network. However, some customers have suggested lack of access could be a result of speed throttling.

Taking the time to respond to queries on the provider's Twitter page ( @virginmedia), a spokesperson for Virgin Media said it was aware there was a technical glitch and that it was working to restore access to the online storage sites as soon as possible. It denied purposely blocking access to the sites in question.

The official Virgin Media spokesperson commented: "We are aware of an issue whereby certain file upload sites were unavailable for Virgin Media customers from late evening Thursday 13 May. Virgin Media did not block these sites and we are investigating the root cause. In the meantime we have implemented a workaround, and customers should be able to now access these sites again. We apologise for any inconvenience."

In separate Virgin Media news, the provider has announced changes to its cable broadband and phone services and is currently offering out its up to 10Mb broadband package for an introductory price of £5 per month (for the first three months).

Providing users with unlimited downloads (subject to a fair usage policy) this bundle will rise to £12.50 a month when taken with a Virgin Phone line (an extra £11.99 per month). For this, subscribers will be able to make use of unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles.

Alternatively, faster broadband packages are also available with a special introductory offer. Its up to 20Mb broadband and phone package will be priced at £10 a month for the first three months, rising to £20. Meanwhile, its up to 50Mb bundle will be priced at £33 for the first three months and then £38 a month (subject to a one-off £20 activation fee).

All of these promotional packages are based on a 12-month contract.

nice of you to advirtise virgins services
insted of getting to the bottom of the problem, yes we can now access Rapidshare
but eve with a RS prem account the download speeds are worse than a 10mb connection
when using a 50mb connection. yes i havespeeed tested and get a max speed of 6MB per sec using virgins speed tester.

Not got the "magicbox" email, but getting mightily p-d off at the number of "Amazing HD, no extra monthly fee ... for as little as £5.50 per month..." leaflets I have received.

Virgin come over as a bunch of lying crooks at times.

When I report a fault it seems it's always a fault with my installation, requires an engineer call out, which they book, then cancel without telling me because it was their network problem after all. I have lost count of how long I have waited on customer service calls only to get someone who does not understand the issues only to dose out 'needs an engineer callout' like 'take an aspirin', and with accent difficulties half the time I cannot understand them and it seems they cannot understand me. Absolute nightmare when things go wrong.

It looks like Virgin are more interested in gaining customers than looking after those customers.

Do what jon doe said and scan your computer. You've likely been infected with some sort of malware. And next time you get a winner notification for something that, A: you didn't enter and, B: hasn't been advertised, please take it with a very, very large pinch of salt.

I am just after sending Virgin a cheeky email about their Customer Services but on the magicbox thing I don't get where the problem was getting into it , just type in virgin magicbox in google and you can find it . However I wouldn't bother since it is a derisory offer of discounted Virgin wines or "Experience Days" . Utterly laughable . Virgin used to be great for CS but now they haven't a clue and are getting close to the way SKY have been . I swapped providers for 6 mths to SKY and changed back to Virgin for their superior Customer Services but I think I may have to rethink if they don't get their act together . I feel sorry for the CS folk who know their stuff because by the time we get to speak to one of them we're quite possibly irate at not getting to them sooner , eg I was on the phone on 3 occasions trying to get through to mobile broadband and was transferred on 2 of those occasions to cable broadband help and was charged 10p each time for the pleasure ! Very disappointed .

To illustrate my earlier point , give Vm a call and ask to speak with a manager , it wont happen. They will leave those kids to take the brunt of your wrath.Jason is absolutely right , they are more interested in new customers than treating the existing ones with any decency. My best advice is read each and every bill , then read it again , understand what it is you are being charged for and question anything doubtful.I lost count of the times people were overcharged for the simplest little things for years. It adds up and they might offer you the usual few months free service cos they wont refund you.I was there three years so i do know a little about how they operate. Its stomach turning.

I think Virgin Media need to rethink there game plan , or is that the con plan. One very important thing they have forgotten is we the public are their Bread and Butter , i think they should tread very carefully and treat customers with respect and stop insulting peoples intelligence, and making fools of us, by now i am sure you can guess that i have recieved the same text , but i am afraid thats life in a world of cheap tricks , conning people and advertising. Great lengths some companys will go to.

tried downloading their umpteenth "Email upgrade" and everything crashed
    Bloody useless.

The prize is well worth having.......when I managed to get on it came up with "this offer has now closed"
There are loads of other providers out there that we could ALL change to and maybe we should?

Well now, I've had my mobile phone with Virgin for nearly five years, and I think it's been an excellent service and I've no plans to change networks. OK so Virgin have made a mistake and some of you, by the sound of it, are pretty annoyed, and a few of you even feel that you have been ripped off in some way
Well I think it's quite funny really, none off you know what it is that you've missed out on, none of you have contracts that say you are due to receive anything, so why all the Hoo-Har, I know its good to get something for nothing now and again, but would it really have made that much difference to your lives? I seriously doubt it.
So please lets all just take a deep breath and relax and give Virgin a chance to sort things out.
Having said that, an apology would be a good starting point.
