Sky looking to lure in new customers by offering 3D channel to millions from October

Sky has today announced that it will launch Sky 3D, Europe's first 3D channel from the beginning of October. Featuring a line-up up of movies and live sport the service will be available to any Sky HD user that has already purchased a 3D-ready television.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky's Chief Executive, said: “As with High Definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide. Following hot on the heels of the success of 3D cinema, Sky customers will now be the first anywhere in Europe to experience 3D TV from the comfort of their living rooms. They can look forward to a fantastic mix of live sport, blockbuster movies, and innovative entertainment and arts shows.”

A bumper weekend of entertainment is promised on the 1st of October, including coverage of the Ryder Cup golf tournament along with hit movies Bolt and Monsters vs Aliens. Sky 3D will then fill out its entertainment selection with additional movies including Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince and My Bloody Valentine.

Sky has also struck a deal with US cable company HBO to become the UK portal for all of their programming. The first release will be the Martin Scorsese project Boardwalk Empire. HBO shows will also be available through its on-demand services.
