Virgin Media launches its first online and mobile TV player in beta

Broadband fans now have the option of another new way of watching content online thanks to the Virgin Media Player.

Currently enjoying a beta trial, the media player will give online access to content from the likes of ITV, Living, Disney, Cartoon Network and National Geographic. A new agreement with MTV Networks UK & Ireland means that viewers will also be able to see a selection of shows from MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media said: “MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon already offer some hugely popular shows on our TV on demand platform so we’re delighted to be expanding our line-up across all three screens. We continue to explore innovative new ways to bring our customers’ favorite content to them and, with Virgin Media Player, we’re making sure they’re spoilt for choice.”

While the beta trialling continues, customers with the Virgin XL TV package, who also have broadband, will be able to investigate the player for themselves by first registering at www.virginmedia.com/player.

Mobile broadband and smartphone users will also be able to enjoy a mobile version of the Virgin Media Player, which will feature 4oD content, along with MTV Snax, which is a channel made specifically for mobile viewers. It features what are effectively 'lite' versions of favourite shows, including Cribs, The Hills and Nitro Circus.

Virgin Media Player should see an official unveiling later in the year.
