BT connects new fibre-optic service in Fife and announces further exchange upgrades

Home and business broadband users in the Fife area were the latest consumers to be hooked up to BT's fibre-optic network this week.

Nearly 4,000 homes in the area of Scotland will now be able to enjoy download speeds of around 40MB, while uploading can reach around 10MB. BT says it has plans to beef up the performance even more over time, with the potential for delivering 60MB download speeds. This would give it the edge over the Virgin Media equivalent fibre-optic cable service of 50MB.

BT has also announced that it has plans to upgrade another 199 telephone exchanges, which it hopes will allow an additional 18 million homes across the country to enjoy 20MB ADSL2 broadband internet. The telecoms giant claims that it could have 66 per cent of the country connected to similarly potent high-speed broadband services in around five years time.

The rollout is part of the Wholesale Broadband Connect initiative, a programme that involves the eventual upgrade of all exchanges. Currently the number being covered is 504, with a combination of traditional copper wire and the rather more resilient fiber-optic cabling being used.

Ha HA BT's deadbeat army of Broadband engineers couldn't sort a fibre optic cable to save their lives............. BT takes the government hand outs and runs. There is no chance this steam driven outfit will ever deliver on broadband in the UK. They are wed to copper so don't expect a super internet high way here any time soon. If you want a high speed connection you will have to install it yourself like all the frustrated users are doing Rutland etal.
