Motorola Xoom tablet with Android 3 and raft of next-gen technology is unveiled at CES
Motorola has taken the covers off its Android 3 Honeycomb powered tablet device in Las Vegas. The quirkily titled Xoom comes with a 10-inch screen featuring 1280x800 resolution and a chunky dual-core 1GHz processor.
The tablet is one of the first to benefit from the improved Honeycomb OS, although the device also stands out by having some very desirable technology on board. Alongside an HDMI outlet there is support for 1080p HD video along with the capacity for 720p video capture. There's a two-megapixel front-facing camera, plus five-megapixel rear camera.
Other new toys include a gyroscope, barometer, eCompass and performance is boosted by the addition of an accelerometer, along with full support for Flash content. Better still, the tablet will be available as a 4G LTE/Wi-Fi edition in the second quarter of this year although initial Xoom models will come in a 3G/Wi-Fi version. No word on UK release dates or pricing as yet.
Meanwhile, in other tablet-related news it seems that HP will now delay its own offering, called the Slate, until February 9 due to a number of technical issues. RIM, owners of BlackBerry, are also dragging their heels when it comes to announcing a firm release date for their own PlayBook tablet, with 'early 2011' still being mooted.
