Forget the cards - social networking tools being used to send Mother’s Day greetings
Bad news for 17 million mums who are expecting a Mother’s Day card this Sunday as new research has found that one in ten won’t get one. However, instead 1.5 million will be getting a Mother’s Day greeting via social networking websites this weekend.
Broadband provider TalkTalk has released latest research that shows social networking is the tool of choice for many sons and daughters, many of which are eschewing the traditional greetings card in favour of an electronic message.
It also found that more mothers, 20 per cent compared to 14 per cent of their kids, thought that messages sent online are as personal as paper cards. A text message was also expected by many mothers, with 18 per cent saying that would do the trick, while just 4 per cent of tech savvy mothers were bothered about getting a video message on the big day.
Tristia Clarke from TalkTalk said: “Social networking sites are now used as the primary form of communication for much of the UK; that’s why as many as 1.5 million mums should expect their Mothering messages to be delivered over social media this Sunday.”
“And children can rest assured that mums do understand the digital world – more mums than we might think view digital messages as a personal way to receive warm wishes on Mothering Sunday.”
Despite the advent of electronic greetings, social networking and the humble text message, it’s still the traditional paper card that tops our Mother’s Day duties. Seventy eight per cent of sons and daughters deliver one by hand or stick one in the post.
