Three Mobile predicts 10Mb average mobile broadband speeds within five years
At a London conference today, a mobile broadband expert predicted that within five years UK mobile broadband speeds would average 10Mb in certain parts of the country.
During a panel discussion at the Avren Events Connected Home Global Summit in Knightsbridge Erol Hepsaydir, 3 UK's director of radio technology, was asked where mobile broadband in the UK would be in five years time.
He first suggested that by then all mobile handsets would be smartphones, while next year's LTE auction would usher in the opportunity for the UK's mobile networks to significantly increase speeds.
When pushed for specifics, Hepsaydir said the industry should aim for a minimum mobile broadband speed of 2Mb, while predicting average speeds in the bigger cities should average around 10Mb by 2016.
These predictions seem a little depressing in the light of news today from T-Mobile in the US. According to a spokesperson, Americans can look forward to 4G mobile broadband speeds of up to 42Mb as early as this year. So just why are we aiming so low?
