Windows XP users start saving for Windows 7 as XP support to stop in three years
While the horror show that was Windows Vista left a scar on many Windows users, previous incarnation XP was a real triumph - so much so that masses of us continue to use it to this day. But sadly, Microsoft is set to pull the plug on support for the aging operating system.
Now 10 years old, Microsoft Windows XP is still going strong and after the Vista ‘experiment’, many are of the opinion that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But with Windows 7 receiving strong reviews Microsoft clearly feels the time is right to force the issue and get the old guard to upgrade.
The news broke on Monday via a Windows blog from Microsoft’s Stephen L Rose, who said “extended support” for Windows XP would run out in “less than 1,000 days”.
Rose went on: “On April 8, 2014, security patches and hot fixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available. So bottom line, PCs running Windows XP will be vulnerable to security threats. Furthermore, many third party software providers are not planning to extend support for their applications running on Windows XP.”
At least Windows 7 is indeed a strong and reliable operating system, which is available as an upgrade to either XP or Vista for less than £100. Even with support continuing, vista users are advised to check it out - it is a huge step up!
But if you really don't want to give any more of your money to Microsoft, you could always consider the Linux route. It's free and will run a lot of your favourite programs and games, although it certainly has its issues - especially for beginners.
